KV-1 (1939) – Early Production Soviet Heavy Tank

Recreate the imposing appearance of the early Soviet KV-1 with this detailed 3D-printed model. Depicting the tank in its initial 1939 configuration, it carries the EARLY PRODUCTION badge to distinguish it from the better-known KV-1 versions manufactured after the design entered wider production.

Historical Role

Developed for the Red Army on the eve of World War II, the KV was a heavily armoured breakthrough tank intended to attack fortified positions and withstand anti-tank fire while supporting advancing infantry. Early vehicles were associated with Soviet heavy-tank development during the Winter War period. The KV-1 subsequently became an important early-war tank on the Eastern Front, where its armour presented a serious challenge to many contemporary anti-tank weapons.

Distinctive Appearance

The 1939 KV-1 is defined by its tall, angular welded turret, compact main armament mounting, broad tracks and substantial slab-sided hull. Its high rear deck, prominent suspension arrangement and powerful, forward-heavy silhouette give it an unmistakable presence. This model represents an early 1939 configuration, which is the specific reason for its production-era badge, rather than a later KV-1 with revised turret, armament installation or detail layout.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Winter War and early Eastern Front dioramas, Soviet armour collections and historically themed wargaming displays. Smaller scales suit model railways and compact battlefield scenes, while larger versions offer collectors and painters more room to highlight cast and welded surfaces, track weathering, winter camouflage, dust and operational wear.

Fun Fact

The initials “KV” came from Kliment Voroshilov, the Soviet military and political figure after whom the tank series was named. The design’s single-turret layout contrasted with several competing Soviet heavy-tank concepts that used multiple turrets.
