KV-1 (1942)

Bring a formidable Red Army heavy tank to your collection with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model of the KV-1 in its 1942 configuration. Built for the demanding conditions of the Eastern Front, the KV-1 combined thick armour, a powerful 76.2 mm gun and an imposing profile that made it one of the most recognisable Soviet tanks of World War II.

Historical Role

The KV-1 served as a Soviet breakthrough heavy tank, intended to penetrate defended positions and support infantry and armoured formations. Its substantial armour initially provided exceptional protection against many early-war anti-tank weapons. By 1942, increasingly capable enemy guns, rising vehicle weight and continuing transmission and mobility difficulties reduced its advantage, but the KV-1 remained an important battlefield asset until more mobile Soviet heavy tanks replaced it.

Distinctive Appearance

The 1942 KV-1 is distinguished by its tall, angular hull, broad tracks, compact turret and long 76.2 mm gun. Prominent track guards, heavy armour plates, external fuel tanks and robust running gear give the vehicle its characteristic solid appearance. Many 1942-production vehicles featured a rounded cast turret, although details could differ between factories and production batches.

Variant Differences

The 1942 configuration developed from earlier KV-1 production models. It commonly combined the ZiS-5 76.2 mm gun with strengthened armour, revised turret construction and manufacturing simplifications suited to wartime production. Compared with earlier KV-1s fitted with L-11 or F-32 guns, its armament installation and turret details changed visibly, while additional weight placed further demands on the existing automotive components. These revisions aimed to maintain protection and firepower while accelerating output.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, historical model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armoured vehicles. It can represent an advancing heavy tank, an infantry-support scene, a winter column or a vehicle undergoing field maintenance.

Fun Fact

The initials “KV” honoured Kliment Voroshilov, a prominent Soviet military and political figure. The KV series later provided the developmental foundation for the IS family of Soviet heavy tanks.
