KV-1 Casting Turret (1942) – RARE VARIANT
Recreate a distinctive Soviet heavy tank configuration with this detailed KV-1 Casting Turret (1942) model. Representing the cast-turret arrangement fitted to some KV-1s during 1942, it offers an uncommon alternative to the more familiar welded-turret appearance. The RARE VARIANT badge highlights this distinctive cast turret configuration without implying separate prototype or production status.
Historical Role
The KV-1 served as a heavily armoured breakthrough tank for the Red Army during the Second World War. On the Eastern Front, it was intended to engage fortified positions, support infantry advances and withstand anti-tank fire that could defeat lighter Soviet vehicles. By 1942, the KV-1 remained formidable, although its weight, mobility and mechanical demands increasingly affected its battlefield effectiveness.
Distinctive Appearance
This version is defined by its cast turret, with more rounded surfaces and flowing contours than a turret assembled from flat welded armour plates. The substantial turret profile, prominent gun mantlet, compact upper hull and broad tracks give the vehicle the powerful, purposeful silhouette associated with the KV series.
Variant Differences
Developed from the standard KV-1 heavy tank, this configuration retained the established KV-1 chassis and its typical 76.2 mm ZiS-5 main armament. Its principal distinction was manufacturing rather than battlefield function: the turret was formed as a large casting instead of being built primarily from welded armour plates. This created the most visible modelling difference—rounded turret sides and cast surface geometry—while providing Soviet factories with an alternative method of turret production.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, this model can represent a tank column, defensive position, maintenance scene or infantry-supported advance. The range of scales makes it suitable for both compact layouts and highly detailed armour collections.
Fun Fact
The initials “KV” honoured Soviet military and political figure Kliment Voroshilov, giving the heavy tank series its widely recognised designation.
