KV-1 M1940

Bring an iconic early-war Soviet heavy tank to your collection with this detailed KV-1 M1940 3D-printed model. Developed for the Red Army before the opening stages of the Eastern Front, the KV-1 combined heavy armour, broad tracks and a 76.2 mm gun in a formidable battlefield package.

Historical Role

The KV-1 M1940 served as a heavy breakthrough tank, intended to engage fortified positions, overcome defended ground and support advancing Soviet formations. During the opening phase of the German invasion in 1941, its armour could be extremely difficult for many contemporary anti-tank guns to defeat. Mechanical problems, limited visibility and demanding battlefield conditions reduced its effectiveness, but the KV-1 still earned a powerful reputation.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, slab-sided hull, compact angular turret, wide tracks and six large road wheels on each side. The turret’s rear overhang, prominent gun mantlet and substantial armour give the M1940 a purposeful, top-heavy profile characteristic of early KV-series tanks.

Variant Differences

The M1940 developed from the initial KV production type commonly identified as the Model 1939. Its principal change was the replacement of the earlier L-11 gun with the 76.2 mm F-32, accompanied by corresponding mantlet and gun-fitting details. It retained the KV’s diesel-powered, torsion-bar-suspended chassis and heavy armour concept, while providing the Red Army with improved main armament.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armour. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway scenes and gaming forces to larger display models with stronger visual presence.

Fun Fact

The initials “KV” honoured Soviet military and political figure Kliment Voroshilov. The tank’s armour proved so imposing in 1941 that German forces often required heavier anti-aircraft guns, artillery or close-range tactics to disable it.
