KV-13 1942 – PROTOTYPE
The KV-13 1942 is a detailed scale model of an experimental Soviet armoured vehicle developed during the demanding conditions of the Eastern Front. Conceived as a “universal tank,” the project sought to combine the mobility and manageable weight of a medium tank with protection closer to that of the KV heavy tank family. Its experimental status is the reason this model carries the PROTOTYPE badge.
Historical Role
Developed in 1942, the KV-13 was intended to explore a more mobile and compact alternative to existing Soviet heavy tanks. Its proposed battlefield role combined armoured breakthrough duties with sufficient mobility for broader Red Army operations. The project remained experimental rather than becoming a standard combat vehicle, but the engineering work provided valuable experience for later Soviet heavy tank development.
Distinctive Appearance
The KV-13 is distinguished by its compact proportions, broad tracks and heavily armoured form. A sloped, rounded hull front and cast-looking surfaces give it a noticeably different character from the more angular KV series. Five large road wheels on each side, a relatively short hull and a rounded turret create a purposeful silhouette that visually bridges Soviet medium and heavy tank design.
Modelling Uses
This unusual vehicle is ideal for prototype workshops, factory scenes, proving-ground dioramas and speculative Eastern Front displays. Smaller scales suit model railways and large wargaming displays, while larger versions provide a strong centrepiece for detailed painting, weathering and Red Army vehicle collections. It is particularly appealing to collectors interested in experimental armour and the evolution of Soviet wartime tank design.
Fun Fact
The KV-13 was often described as a Soviet “universal tank” concept. Although it did not enter regular service, lessons from its development helped inform the design path that led toward the later IS heavy tank family.
