KV-1S
Recreate a notable development in Soviet heavy tank design with the Blueprint to Print 3D KV-1S. Introduced during World War II, this streamlined member of the KV family combined substantial firepower with improved mobility, making it an excellent subject for Eastern Front collections, battlefield scenes and historically themed displays.
Historical Role
The KV-1S entered Red Army service in late 1942 as a more mobile response to the excessive weight and mechanical strain associated with later KV-1 tanks. It retained the role of a heavy breakthrough tank, supporting infantry and engaging fortified positions and enemy armour with its 76.2 mm gun. Reduced armour and a lighter design improved speed and handling, although these compromises left the KV-1S with protection and armament increasingly close to those of contemporary Soviet medium tanks.
Distinctive Appearance
The KV-1S is distinguished by its compact cast turret, prominent commander’s cupola and less imposing silhouette compared with many KV-1 variants. Its broad tracks, substantial suspension, angular hull and centrally mounted turret preserve the purposeful appearance of the KV family, while the revised turret shape gives the vehicle a more balanced and mobile look.
Variant Differences
Developed from the KV-1, the KV-1S used reduced armour, a lighter hull and an improved transmission to increase mobility and mechanical reliability. It retained a 76.2 mm main gun, but introduced a smaller turret with a commander’s cupola for better battlefield observation. These visible and mechanical changes were intended to produce a faster, more practical heavy tank without abandoning the established KV design.
Modelling Uses
This model is suitable for Eastern Front dioramas, Soviet armoured columns, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. Smaller scales work well in larger battlefield or railway settings, while the larger options provide greater presence for painting, weathering and display alongside infantry, artillery or support vehicles.
Fun Fact
The letter “S” represented the Russian word for “fast,” reflecting the Red Army’s aim of creating a quicker and more manageable version of the KV-1.
