WWII Lighter and More Mobile KV-1 Variant
The KV-1S was developed to correct the growing weight and mobility problems of the original KV-1. By reducing armour, redesigning the turret and improving the transmission, Soviet engineers created a lighter heavy tank that was faster, easier to operate and more reliable in the field.
The letter “S” came from the Russian word skorostnoy, meaning “fast.” With its rounded turret, commander’s cupola, wide tracks and external fuel tanks, the KV-1S has a distinctive appearance that separates it from the heavier, slab-sided KV-1 variants.
The Story Behind the Tank
A KV-1S leads a Soviet column along a muddy road toward the front. The crew appreciates its improved speed and easier handling, but they know that the lighter armour provides less protection than earlier KV tanks.
The commander scans the road through his new cupola while the driver keeps the vehicle moving before the ground becomes impassable. Its 76.2 mm gun remains effective against many targets, but newer German armour is beginning to challenge it.
The KV-1S represents a practical compromise: sacrifice some protection to create a heavy tank that can actually keep pace with the changing battlefield.
Historical Background
By 1942, additional armour had made the KV-1 increasingly heavy, slow and mechanically unreliable. It carried essentially the same gun as the lighter T-34 but was more difficult and expensive to operate.
The KV-1S was introduced as a lighter alternative. Armour thickness was reduced, the hull was revised and a smaller cast turret was fitted. An improved transmission and reduced weight increased mobility, while a commander’s cupola provided better battlefield visibility.
The tank retained the 76.2 mm ZiS-5 main gun. Although mobility improved, the reduction in armour weakened the KV-1’s main advantage, while its gun offered little improvement over contemporary medium tanks.
The KV-1S nevertheless became an important transitional vehicle. Its chassis contributed to the development of the SU-152 self-propelled gun and the KV-85, which introduced the more powerful 85 mm gun before the arrival of the IS series.

Interesting Fact
The KV-1S was one of the few heavy tanks deliberately given less armour to improve performance. Soviet engineers recognised that protection was of little use if mechanical problems prevented the tank from reaching the battle.

The “S” stood for “fast”—although no one watching more than 40 tonnes of steel approach would have mistaken it for a racing car!

Painting and Weathering Ideas
Finish the vehicle in Soviet military green with dark steel tracks and polished wear on the raised track surfaces. Add mud around the suspension, dust across the upper hull and fuel stains beneath the external tanks.
For a winter vehicle, apply an uneven temporary whitewash with visible brush marks and worn areas around hatches and turret edges. Add simple tactical numbers or Soviet slogans for extra character.
