Breakthrough Tank with 152 mm Howitzer

The KV-2 was one of the most distinctive armoured vehicles of WWII. Developed from the heavily armoured KV-1 chassis, it carried a massive box-shaped turret containing a powerful 152 mm M-10T howitzer.

Designed to attack bunkers, fortifications and reinforced defensive positions, the KV-2 combined tremendous firepower with exceptional early-war armour protection. Its towering turret, broad tracks and oversized gun make it an unmistakable centrepiece for any Soviet collection or Eastern Front diorama.

The Story Behind the Tank

A KV-2 slowly approaches a fortified position while Soviet infantry follows behind its heavy armour. Enemy shells strike the hull as the crew carefully brings the enormous turret around toward a concrete bunker.

Inside, the loader and assistant wrestle with the heavy two-part ammunition. The driver must position the tank on stable ground because the great weight of the turret makes aiming difficult on a slope.

When the 152 mm gun finally fires, the blast fills the fighting compartment with noise and smoke. The KV-2 may be slow and awkward, but a direct hit from its massive shell can demolish the position blocking the Soviet advance.

Historical Background

The KV-2 was developed following Soviet experience during the Winter War against Finland. Strong Finnish bunkers had proven difficult to destroy, creating an urgent need for a heavily armoured vehicle carrying a large-calibre weapon.

Soviet engineers mounted the 152 mm M-10T howitzer inside a large rotating turret fitted to the KV heavy-tank chassis. The weapon could fire powerful high-explosive and concrete-piercing ammunition against bunkers, buildings and fortified positions.

The KV-2’s armour made it extremely difficult for many early German tank and anti-tank guns to destroy. However, its enormous turret created a very high silhouette and placed considerable strain on the turret mechanism, engine, transmission and suspension.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, many KV-2s were lost through mechanical breakdowns, fuel shortages or abandonment rather than direct enemy fire. Production ended as Soviet factories relocated and concentrated on more practical combat vehicles.

Interesting Fact

The KV-2’s turret was so large and heavy that the tank needed to stand on reasonably level ground for reliable turret operation. On a steep slope, rotating its enormous turret could become extremely difficult.

The KV-2 looked like someone had placed a small apartment building on top of a tank—and then fitted a 152 mm howitzer through the front door!

Painting and Weathering Ideas

Finish the KV-2 in Soviet military green with dark steel tracks and polished wear across the raised track surfaces. Add heavy mud around the suspension, dust across the turret and oil or fuel staining around the engine deck.

For a winter vehicle, apply an uneven temporary whitewash with visible brush marks and worn patches revealing the original green. A captured vehicle can be finished with prominent German identification crosses and additional field-applied markings.
