KV-85 – LIMITED PRODUCTION
Recreate one of the Red Army’s important transitional heavy tanks with this detailed KV-85 3D-printed model. Introduced during World War II, the KV-85 combined the established KV heavy-tank chassis with more powerful armament, helping to bridge the gap between the earlier KV series and the emerging IS family.
Historical Role
The KV-85 entered service in 1943 as Soviet forces sought a heavy tank capable of engaging increasingly formidable German armour on the Eastern Front. Its 85 mm D-5T gun offered a significant improvement over the 76 mm armament of earlier KV tanks. Serving with Red Army heavy-tank units, it supported offensives, engaged fortified positions and provided additional anti-armour capability. The KV-85 was produced only in relatively small numbers as an interim heavy tank, which is why this model carries the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle retains the imposing hull, broad tracks and six large road wheels associated with the KV series, while its larger, rounded turret and long 85 mm gun create a noticeably different silhouette. The commander’s cupola, reshaped upper hull around the turret and absence of the earlier conventional bow machine-gun mounting are useful recognition features.
Variant Differences
Developed from the lighter and more mobile KV-1S, the KV-85 replaced its smaller turret and 76 mm gun with a larger turret mounting the 85 mm D-5T. Accommodating this installation required changes around the turret ring and crew layout. These visible and mechanical alterations created a temporary solution while the new IS heavy tank was being prepared for wider service.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of unusual Soviet armour. It is particularly suited to late-1943 and 1944 scenes, heavy-tank formations, repair yards, road columns and battlefield displays.
Fun Fact
The KV-85’s turret design was closely connected to the development of the succeeding IS heavy-tank family, giving the vehicle a distinctive combination of KV running gear and next-generation Soviet turret styling.
