LVT(A)-1

The LVT(A)-1 was an American armoured amphibious vehicle developed during World War II to provide immediate fire support during contested landings. Combining the water-crossing ability of the Landing Vehicle Tracked family with a fully enclosed armoured hull and turret-mounted cannon, it could accompany assault waves across reefs, lagoons and beaches where conventional tanks and landing craft might struggle.

Historical Role

Used principally in the Pacific Theater, the LVT(A)-1 was intended to engage enemy strongpoints as troops approached and crossed the shoreline. Its 37 mm gun and machine guns provided mobile covering fire against bunkers, infantry positions and other lightly protected targets. Once ashore, it continued supporting the advance until heavier tanks and artillery could be landed, although its relatively light protection meant it was not designed to fight as a conventional battle tank.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle’s broad, boat-like hull, high sides and continuous tracks fitted with prominent cleats gave it an unmistakable amphibious profile. A compact, rounded turret sat above the enclosed fighting compartment, while machine-gun positions at the rear added to its characteristic silhouette. The combination of a tank-style turret and the long, slab-sided LVT hull makes the LVT(A)-1 especially distinctive in a Pacific landing scene.

Variant Differences

The LVT(A)-1 developed from the LVT-2 Water Buffalo, retaining its basic amphibious running gear while replacing the cargo-focused layout with an armoured fighting compartment. Its principal armament was a turret-mounted 37 mm gun derived from the M3 light tank arrangement, supported by rear machine guns. These changes created a dedicated fire-support vehicle rather than a troop or cargo carrier.

Modelling Uses

This detailed model is ideal for Pacific beach-assault dioramas, military model railways, historically themed wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It can be paired with landing craft, infantry, engineering vehicles or other LVT variants to recreate amphibious operations and shoreline staging areas.

Fun Fact

Although it looked like an amphibious tank, the LVT(A)-1’s primary purpose was to deliver supporting fire during the vulnerable transition from water to land.
