LVT(A)-4

The LVT(A)-4 was an American armoured amphibious support vehicle developed for World War II operations in the Pacific. Combining the water-crossing capability of the Landing Vehicle Tracked family with a turret-mounted 75 mm howitzer, it provided landing forces with mobile firepower during the vulnerable transition from sea to shore.

Historical Role

Used by United States forces in major Pacific island campaigns, the LVT(A)-4 supported amphibious assaults by engaging bunkers, fortified positions and enemy troops near landing beaches. Its tracked propulsion allowed it to cross reefs, shallow water, sand and difficult coastal ground where conventional tanks or landing craft could struggle. Unlike troop-carrying LVTs, it was intended primarily as a fire-support vehicle rather than an armoured transport.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle featured a broad, boat-like hull, high sides and full-length tracks fitted with prominent cleats for propulsion in water and traction ashore. Its most recognisable feature was the open-topped, circular turret carrying a short-barrelled 75 mm howitzer. The elevated hull profile, exposed turret interior and rugged amphibious running gear create a distinctive silhouette suited to Pacific beach scenes.

Variant Differences

The LVT(A)-4 developed from the LVT(A)-1 armoured amphibian, retaining the same general amphibious chassis and tracked drive arrangement. Its principal change was the replacement of the LVT(A)-1’s enclosed 37 mm gun turret with an open-topped M8-style turret mounting a 75 mm howitzer. This larger, short-barrelled weapon and open fighting compartment are the clearest modelling differences. The variant was created to deliver more effective high-explosive fire against field fortifications and defended landing areas.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Pacific theatre dioramas, amphibious landing scenes, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of United States World War II vehicles. It can be displayed approaching a beach, crossing a reef or supporting infantry amid sand, vegetation and damaged fortifications.

Fun Fact

Despite the “4” in its designation, the LVT(A)-4 was not simply an armoured version of the cargo-carrying LVT-4; its lineage and battlefield purpose were those of a dedicated amphibious fire-support vehicle.
