M1 155 mm Long Tom
Bring American heavy artillery to your collection with this detailed model of the M1 155 mm “Long Tom.” Developed for the United States Army, this powerful field gun became one of America’s best-known long-range artillery pieces of the Second World War. Its impressive proportions and unmistakably long barrel make it a striking centrepiece for any military scene.
Historical Role
The M1 Long Tom served as a heavy field gun, delivering long-range fire against enemy artillery, fortified positions, transport routes and other important targets. It was used by US forces in several theatres, including North Africa, Italy, Western Europe and the Pacific. Normally transported by a heavy artillery tractor or truck, the gun was positioned behind the front line and operated by a trained crew supported by ammunition and fire-control personnel.
Distinctive Appearance
The Long Tom is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally long, slender barrel, substantial recoil mechanism and large split-trail carriage. Its heavy road wheels, angular trails and low firing stance give the weapon a purposeful silhouette. When displayed with towing equipment, crew figures, ammunition crates or prepared gun positions, the model effectively conveys the scale and logistical demands of American heavy artillery.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II dioramas depicting artillery batteries, counter-battery missions, transport columns or rear-area emplacements. It also makes an impressive addition to model railways with military traffic, historically themed wargaming displays and collections of American ordnance. Larger scales offer scope for detailed painting and weathering, while smaller scales suit expansive battlefield scenes and railway layouts.
Fun Fact
The Long Tom’s carriage was closely related to the carriage used for the US M1 8-inch howitzer, helping standardise equipment and support arrangements for two different types of heavy artillery.
