M1 57 mm Anti-Tank Gun
Bring an important American World War II anti-tank weapon to your collection with this detailed M1 57 mm Anti-Tank Gun model. Compact yet purposeful, the M1 is ideal for recreating US Army gun positions, towing scenes and defensive lines from the middle and later years of the conflict.
Historical Role
Adopted as a more powerful successor to the 37 mm anti-tank gun, the M1 provided American infantry units with improved protection against increasingly well-armoured enemy vehicles. It was normally operated by a dedicated crew and could be concealed in prepared positions, deployed along likely tank approaches or moved by a suitable towing vehicle. Although heavier anti-tank weapons became necessary as armour protection increased, the 57 mm gun remained useful against lighter vehicles, vulnerable side armour and fortified positions.
Distinctive Appearance
The M1 has a recognisable low-profile silhouette, with a long, slender barrel projecting beyond a compact shield. Its split-trail carriage, paired wheels, angular shield plates and prominent breech area give the model a highly characteristic wartime appearance. When displayed with crew figures, ammunition boxes, camouflage netting or a towing vehicle, these details create a convincing field emplacement.
Variant Differences
The M1 was the American-produced development of the British Ordnance QF 6-pounder anti-tank gun. It was adapted for US manufacture and used a longer barrel than the early short-barrel British 6-pounder Mk II, giving it a visibly more elongated profile. The weapon was adopted to provide greater anti-armour capability than the lighter 37 mm gun while remaining practical for infantry anti-tank units.
Modelling Uses
This model suits World War II dioramas, military model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of Allied artillery. It can represent a concealed firing position, roadside deployment, gun line, maintenance scene or vehicle-towed column.
Fun Fact
The M1’s ancestry was British, but American production also supported Allied requirements, making the 57 mm gun a notable example of wartime cooperation and shared weapons development.
