M1 90 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun

The American M1 90 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun brings one of the United States’ principal heavy air-defence weapons of the Second World War to your collection. With its long barrel, substantial carriage and purposeful firing platform, this detailed model is ideal for recreating Allied anti-aircraft positions, military installations and field artillery scenes.

Historical Role

Introduced shortly before America entered World War II, the M1 was developed to replace older 3-inch anti-aircraft guns and engage high-altitude bombers. It served with U.S. Army anti-aircraft artillery units in the defence of cities, ports, airfields, supply areas and troop concentrations. Batteries normally operated with range-finding and fire-control equipment, allowing several guns to engage targets as a coordinated unit. The broader 90 mm gun family was later refined for anti-aircraft, anti-armour and tank armament roles.

Distinctive Appearance

The M1 is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally long, slender barrel and large central mounting. Its multi-legged firing platform spreads outward to provide stability and gives the weapon a broad, angular footprint when deployed. Prominent elevation mechanisms, crew positions and the heavy breech assembly create a suitably mechanical appearance, while the contrast between the narrow barrel and robust mounting makes it an impressive centrepiece in any artillery scene.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to World War II dioramas depicting airfield defence, coastal installations, urban protection or a prepared Allied anti-aircraft battery. It can also add an authentic military feature to period model railways, serve as a heavy support piece in wargaming displays, or stand alone as a detailed subject for collectors. Multiple guns can be combined with crews, ammunition, command equipment and transport vehicles to build a convincing battery position.

Fun Fact

The American 90 mm gun family went beyond air defence: related versions were developed for armoured fighting vehicles, including the M36 tank destroyer and the M26 Pershing heavy tank.
