M101A1 105mm Howitzer

Recreate one of the most recognisable American field artillery pieces of the Second World War with this detailed M101A1 105mm Howitzer model. During the war, the weapon was officially designated the 105mm Howitzer M2A1; the familiar M101A1 designation was introduced later for essentially the same proven design.

Historical Role

The M2A1 served as the standard light howitzer of United States Army infantry divisions during World War II. Usually transported by a motorised prime mover, it provided mobile indirect-fire support against enemy positions, defensive works and troop concentrations. Its 105mm ammunition included high-explosive, smoke and illuminating rounds, allowing artillery batteries to support a wide range of battlefield operations.

Distinctive Appearance

The howitzer is distinguished by its compact barrel, prominent recoil mechanism, angular protective shield and widely spreading split-trail carriage. Large wheels with pneumatic tyres gave the weapon a purposeful, mobile appearance, while the open crew position and visible elevation and traversing equipment create plenty of interest for detailed artillery scenes.

Variant Differences

The wartime M2A1 refined the earlier M2 pattern through detail changes to the tube and breech assembly. These improvements did not substantially alter its characteristic silhouette. The later M101A1 name represented a redesignation rather than a completely new weapon, preserving the same familiar split-trail layout and 105mm armament.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of American military equipment. It can be displayed in a firing position, attached to a suitable towing vehicle, placed within an artillery battery or used as part of a supply and ammunition scene.

Fun Fact

Although widely known today as the M101A1, Second World War photographs, manuals and unit records generally identify this howitzer by its wartime M2A1 designation.
