M16 MGMC

Bring a formidable piece of American World War II mobile firepower to your collection with the Blueprint to Print 3D M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage. Combining the mobility of a half-track with a powerful quadruple heavy-machine-gun mounting, this detailed model captures one of the United States Army’s most recognisable self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles.

Historical Role

The M16 MGMC served primarily as a mobile anti-aircraft platform, protecting armoured and transport formations from low-flying enemy aircraft. Its four .50-calibre M2 Browning machine guns could deliver an intense volume of fire. As Allied air superiority reduced the aerial threat, crews also employed the M16 against infantry, transport, fortified positions and other lightly protected ground targets.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately identifiable by its half-track running gear, armoured driving compartment and prominent M45 Maxson turret carrying four closely grouped machine guns. The open fighting compartment allowed wide traverse and high elevation, while folding side panels improved the weapon crew’s field of fire. Ammunition boxes, angular armour and the combination of front wheels with rear tracks create a characteristically purposeful silhouette.

Variant Differences

The M16 developed from the M3 half-track family, retaining its basic chassis, front-mounted engine and wheeled-and-tracked layout. The rear troop compartment was adapted to carry the powered M45 quadruple machine-gun mount rather than an infantry squad. This conversion produced a mobile anti-aircraft vehicle capable of accompanying mechanised formations while also providing devastating direct-fire support.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the M16 suits air-defence positions, advancing columns, roadside scenes and ground-support engagements. Its unusual armament also makes it a strong centrepiece within an American vehicle collection.

Fun Fact

The M45 quad mounting was famously nicknamed the “meat chopper” because of the overwhelming concentration of fire produced by its four heavy machine guns.
