M19 MGMC

Bring late-World War II American anti-aircraft capability to your collection with this detailed M19 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage. Built around the proven M24 Chaffee light tank chassis, the M19 combined mobility with a powerful twin 40 mm Bofors mounting. Its distinctive open fighting compartment and long paired barrels make it an immediately recognisable addition to military scenes and vehicle displays.

Historical Role

The M19 MGMC was developed to provide mobile air defence for United States Army armoured formations. Its twin Bofors guns were intended to engage low-flying aircraft while keeping pace with fast-moving ground units. Standardised during 1944 and entering service near the end of the war, the M19 arrived too late to see combat during World War II. It later demonstrated the effectiveness of its rapid-firing armament against both aerial and ground targets during the Korean War.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is defined by its rear-mounted, open-topped circular gun turret, prominent twin 40 mm barrels and protective angular gun shields. Ammunition stowage compartments surround the mounting, while the forward driving position and low Chaffee-derived suspension preserve the compact profile of an American light tracked vehicle.

Variant Differences

The M19 was developed from the M24 Chaffee chassis rather than functioning as a conventional gun-tank variant. The powerplant arrangement was relocated toward the centre of the hull, creating space at the rear for the open twin-gun mounting. The Chaffee’s enclosed turret and 75 mm gun were removed, producing a visually and mechanically distinct vehicle designed specifically for mobile anti-aircraft protection.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war vehicle collections, hypothetical European theatre scenes, Korean War dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of American armoured and anti-aircraft vehicles. Multiple scales allow it to suit everything from compact gaming forces to highly detailed display projects.

Fun Fact

The M19’s Bofors guns were loaded with four-round clips, requiring its crew to maintain a steady supply of ammunition during sustained firing.
