M1902 76.2mm Field Gun

Recreate an important piece of American artillery development with this detailed model of the M1902 76.2mm field gun. Designed in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century, the M1902 served during the transitional period between traditional recoiling field pieces and modern quick-firing artillery. Although outdated as a front-line weapon by World War II, surviving guns remained relevant for instruction, reserve duties and historical military settings.

Historical Role

The M1902 was developed as a mobile field artillery weapon intended to support infantry formations with direct and indirect fire. Its recoil system allowed the barrel to move independently while helping the carriage remain in position, enabling crews to reload and fire more efficiently than with earlier guns that rolled backward after every shot. During World War II, the US Army relied on more modern artillery for combat, but the M1902 could still be encountered in training establishments, reserve inventories and ceremonial or instructional roles.

Distinctive Appearance

The gun has the unmistakable profile of an early twentieth-century field piece, combining a long, slender barrel with a compact protective shield, large spoked wheels and a narrow box-trail carriage. Its exposed operating components and relatively upright wheel arrangement give it a markedly different character from the lower, wider split-trail artillery designs that became common during World War II.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for US Army training-ground scenes, interwar displays, arsenal settings and historically themed World War II dioramas. It also makes an unusual artillery load or static exhibit for model railways, a useful objective or scenery piece for wargaming displays, and a distinctive addition for collectors of American military equipment and artillery development.

Fun Fact

The M1902 belonged to the first generation of standard American field guns equipped with an integrated recoil mechanism, a major innovation that helped artillery crews maintain their aim between rounds and achieve a faster practical rate of fire.
