M1918 155 mm GPF Gun

Bring an important piece of American heavy artillery history to your collection with this detailed model of the M1918 155 mm GPF Gun. Derived from a highly successful French design, the American-built M1918 served through the interwar period and remained in use during the early years of World War II.

Historical Role

The M1918 was a long-range heavy field gun intended for counter-battery fire, bombardment of fortified positions and support of large-scale ground operations. During World War II, surviving guns were employed primarily in training and coastal-defence roles, including service with American units in the Pacific. Although increasingly superseded by newer weapons such as the 155 mm “Long Tom,” the GPF remained a powerful and respected artillery system.

Distinctive Appearance

The gun is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long barrel, prominent recoil mechanism, broad protective shield and substantial split-trail carriage. Large wheels and the low, elongated firing profile emphasise the weight and reach of the weapon, making it an imposing centrepiece for an artillery position or transport scene.

Variant Differences

The M1918 was the American-manufactured development of the French Canon de 155 Grande Puissance Filloux, fielded by the United States as the M1917. It retained the original 155 mm armament and characteristic overall layout, while incorporating American production standards and detail changes to the gun and carriage. Domestic manufacture reduced dependence on French supply while preserving the proven performance of the GPF design.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for World War II dioramas, coastal-defence emplacements, artillery batteries and maintenance scenes, this model also suits military model railways, historically themed wargaming displays and specialist collectors. Its distinctive silhouette works equally well as a deployed gun, a towed load or the focus of a detailed artillery crew setting.

Fun Fact

“GPF” stands for Grande Puissance Filloux, meaning “high-powered Filloux,” after French artillery designer Colonel Louis Filloux.
