M198 155mm Towed Howitzer
Bring imposing American field artillery to your collection with this detailed scale model of the M198 155mm towed howitzer. Designed for mobility and powerful long-range fire support, the M198 became an important United States artillery system during the late Cold War and subsequent conflicts. Although listed here under the World War II era, the M198 is historically a post-war weapon that entered US service in 1979.
Historical Role
Developed to replace the older M114 howitzer, the M198 provided US Army and Marine Corps units with heavy indirect-fire support. Its 155mm gun could engage enemy positions, fortifications and troop concentrations using several ammunition types. Designed to be transported by road, aircraft or heavy-lift helicopter, it served in operations including the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan before being progressively replaced by the lighter M777.
Distinctive Appearance
The M198 is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long barrel, prominent recoil mechanism and robust two-wheeled carriage. Its low firing stance, widely spread trails and substantial breech assembly create a purposeful artillery silhouette. Stabilising equipment, towing components and the angular carriage structure add visual interest, making the model an impressive centrepiece in either firing or transport settings.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for modern military dioramas depicting artillery batteries, prepared firing positions, ammunition handling or towing operations. Smaller scales complement military model railways and large battlefield scenes, while larger versions provide added presence for wargaming displays and detailed painting projects. It also makes a distinctive addition for collectors of American artillery, Cold War equipment and post-war military subjects.
Fun Fact
For transport, the M198’s barrel could be rotated over the trails, reducing the overall travelling length and giving the howitzer a noticeably different profile from its deployed firing configuration.
