M2 90 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun
Recreate one of America’s principal heavy anti-aircraft weapons of the Second World War with this detailed M2 90 mm Anti-Aircraft Gun model. Designed to defend strategic positions and field formations from high-altitude air attack, the imposing weapon also possessed a valuable secondary capability against ground targets.
Historical Role
The 90 mm gun entered United States service before America joined the war, replacing older 3-inch anti-aircraft weapons. M2 guns were deployed around ports, industrial centres, airfields and other vital installations, while mobile batteries supported forces overseas. When linked with directors, height finders and radar, batteries could deliver coordinated fire against aircraft at altitude. The M2 mounting also enabled the gun to engage armoured vehicles, fortifications and other ground targets when required.
Distinctive Appearance
The M2 is distinguished by its long 90 mm barrel, substantial breech assembly and broad cruciform firing platform. Folding outriggers provided stability in action, while the transport arrangement gave the weapon a purposeful, heavy silhouette. Handwheels, crew stations, mechanical fittings and the prominent gun shield create an intricate centrepiece for a battery position or artillery scene.
Variant Differences
The M2 developed from the earlier M1-series 90 mm anti-aircraft gun. Its revised mounting permitted greater depression for direct fire against ground targets and incorporated improvements intended to make ammunition handling and operation more effective. For modellers, the mounting arrangement, crew layout and shield are among the most visible distinctions. These changes broadened the weapon’s role beyond dedicated high-angle anti-aircraft defence.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II air-defence emplacements, coastal or industrial dioramas, US Army artillery scenes and vehicle columns halted beside a prepared gun position. It also suits model railways featuring military traffic, wargaming displays requiring a recognisable heavy weapon, and collectors building a representative range of Allied artillery.
Fun Fact
The 90 mm anti-aircraft gun family helped provide the basis for the powerful 90 mm M3 tank gun later fitted to the M26 Pershing, linking America’s heavy air-defence artillery with its late-war armoured development.
