M20 Armoured Utility Car

Bring a versatile American World War II reconnaissance and command vehicle to your collection with the Blueprint to Print 3D M20 Armoured Utility Car. Developed from the M8 Greyhound family, the M20 combined mobility, communications equipment and practical crew space in a compact six-wheeled armoured vehicle.

Historical Role

The M20 served US forces as an armoured command car, reconnaissance vehicle and general-purpose utility platform. Its radio equipment and roomy fighting compartment made it particularly useful for command personnel, liaison duties and coordinating fast-moving armoured formations. Although not intended to fight enemy tanks, it offered protection against small-arms fire and battlefield fragments while retaining good road mobility.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its low, turretless hull, open-topped crew compartment and three-axle 6x6 layout. Sloped armour, angular mudguards, external stowage and a ring-mounted heavy machine gun give the M20 a purposeful silhouette. Its uncluttered upper hull clearly distinguishes it from the turreted M8 Greyhound.

Variant Differences

The M20 was developed from the M8 Greyhound armoured car and retained its automotive components, six-wheel chassis and general hull form. The M8’s turret and 37 mm gun were removed, creating a larger open compartment for crew, radios, maps and command equipment. A ring-mounted .50 calibre machine gun provided defensive firepower. These changes produced a more practical vehicle for command, reconnaissance and liaison work.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for American World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of historic military vehicles. It suits convoy scenes, headquarters areas, reconnaissance patrols, airfield settings and advancing armoured columns, either as a focal vehicle or alongside tanks, trucks and infantry.

Fun Fact

The vehicle was initially designated the M10 Armoured Utility Car, but it was redesignated M20 to avoid confusion with the M10 tank destroyer.
