M26 Pershing
The M26 Pershing was one of the most advanced American tanks to enter service during the Second World War. Developed to provide greater armour protection and firepower than the M4 Sherman, it arrived in Europe during the closing months of the conflict and first saw combat in early 1945. Armed with a powerful 90 mm gun, the Pershing was better equipped to engage heavily armoured German vehicles while also supporting infantry during offensive operations.
Design and Appearance
The M26 has a commanding, purposeful silhouette. Its wide tracks, low hull and substantial rounded turret give it a noticeably heavier appearance than earlier American tanks. The long 90 mm gun, prominent mantlet, sloped frontal armour and large road wheels make the vehicle instantly recognisable. The Pershing was named after General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during the First World War. Initially designated as the T26E3, it was standardised as the M26 in March 1945.
