M26A1 Pershing

Historical Role
The Pershing was created to provide US forces with a tank capable of confronting heavily armoured German vehicles while also supporting infantry and spearheading armoured advances. The original M26 entered combat in Europe in early 1945, where its 90 mm gun offered greater anti-armour capability than earlier American medium tanks. The M26A1 represented a refined Pershing configuration, equipped with the improved M3A1 gun, and the wider Pershing family later continued to serve during the early Cold War and Korean War.

The M26A1 Pershing is distinguished by its broad, low-set hull, sloping frontal armour and large cast turret. Its long 90 mm gun dominates the profile, while the wide tracks, substantial suspension and prominent road wheels give the vehicle a powerful, weighty stance. The rounded turret contours contrast with the angular hull, creating a distinctive appearance that stands apart from both the earlier Sherman and later American tank designs.
