M2A1 105 mm Howitzer
Recreate one of the most recognisable American field artillery pieces of the Second World War with this detailed M2A1 105 mm Howitzer model. Compact, dependable and highly mobile for its class, the M2A1 became a mainstay of US divisional artillery and is an excellent addition to any World War II collection or battlefield scene.
Historical Role
The M2A1 provided American infantry formations with responsive, short-range artillery support throughout World War II. Normally employed for indirect fire, it delivered high-explosive, smoke and other ammunition against enemy troops, defensive positions and battlefield obstacles. Its split-trail carriage and pneumatic tyres allowed it to be towed by military vehicles and brought into action quickly. Although primarily an indirect-fire weapon, it could also engage visible targets directly when circumstances demanded.
Distinctive Appearance
The howitzer is immediately recognisable by its short 105 mm barrel, broad angular shield, sturdy wheels and widely spreading split trails. The compact cradle and recoil assembly give the weapon a purposeful, balanced profile, while the trail spades and towing arrangement reflect the practical requirements of a mobile field gun.
Variant Differences
The M2A1 was a refined version of the earlier M2 howitzer, incorporating changes to the breech-ring and firing mechanism while retaining the same basic weapon layout and battlefield purpose. Its external appearance remained very similar, making details around the breech and operating components more significant than any major change in silhouette. The improvements helped establish the M2A1 as the principal wartime production standard.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Normandy gun positions, Italian Campaign scenes, Pacific island emplacements or late-war European displays, this model suits dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can be shown deployed with trails spread, positioned in a battery, or paired with a towing vehicle and artillery crew.
Fun Fact
The M2A1 enjoyed a remarkably long service life and was redesignated the M101A1 in the 1960s, remaining in use with the United States and numerous allied nations long after World War II.
