M2A4 Light Tank
Represent an important step in the development of American armoured forces with this detailed M2A4 Light Tank model. Introduced shortly before the United States entered World War II, the M2A4 combined the compact proportions of an interwar light tank with a more effective turret-mounted gun, helping establish the layout later refined in the M3 Stuart.
Historical Role
The M2A4 was designed for reconnaissance, infantry support and mobile screening duties. Although increasingly outclassed by newer tanks, it remained valuable for crew training and early wartime service. Most examples served in the United States, but Marine Corps M2A4s also saw combat during the Guadalcanal campaign, where their light weight and mobility were useful despite difficult terrain and determined opposition.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is recognisable by its compact riveted hull, tall single turret, short 37 mm gun and prominent vertical surfaces. Twin-wheel suspension bogies, a raised rear idler, narrow tracks and numerous machine-gun positions give the M2A4 the busy, mechanical appearance typical of American interwar tank design.
Variant Differences
Developed from the M2A3, the M2A4 replaced the earlier twin machine-gun turrets with a larger single turret carrying a 37 mm gun and coaxial machine gun. It also incorporated improved armour protection. The larger central turret and gun are the clearest modelling differences, reflecting the need for greater anti-armour capability and a more practical battlefield vehicle.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for early World War II dioramas, Pacific campaign scenes, training-ground settings and displays charting the evolution of United States armour. Smaller scales suit model railways and wargaming displays, while larger versions provide added presence and detail for painters, military-history enthusiasts and collectors.
Fun Fact
The M2A4’s basic layout and suspension directly influenced the M3 Stuart, one of the best-known American light tanks of World War II.
