Historical Role
The M3 was the standard US Army anti-tank gun at the beginning of America’s involvement in World War II. Crews used it against light armoured vehicles, tanks and fortified positions in campaigns including the Philippines, North Africa and the Pacific. Although its armour-piercing performance became inadequate against increasingly well-protected medium and heavy tanks, its light weight and low profile remained useful. In the Pacific, it was particularly effective when firing high-explosive and canister ammunition against infantry positions, bunkers and massed attacks.
Distinctive Appearance
The M3 featured a long, slender 37 mm barrel mounted on a low-profile carriage, protected by a compact gun shield. Its widely spaced wheels and split trail legs gave the weapon a purposeful stance while allowing the crew to position it close to the ground. These characteristic features make the gun easy to identify in a firing position, being towed or placed beside an American gun crew.
Modelling Uses

Fun Fact
When loaded with canister ammunition, the M3 acted much like an enormous shotgun, projecting multiple small balls in a spreading pattern. This gave the weapon a valuable anti-personnel role long after its usefulness against heavier tanks had declined.
