M3 CDL
The M3 Canal Defence Light was a remarkable World War II adaptation of the American M3 medium tank. Developed from a highly secret British concept, the CDL replaced the M3’s original upper turret with an armoured searchlight turret designed to project an intense beam through a narrow vertical opening. Its misleading name helped conceal the vehicle’s true purpose during development and training.
Historical Character
The M3 CDL retained the unmistakable profile of the M3 medium tank, including its tall hull, prominent track units and hull-mounted 75 mm gun. Its most distinctive feature was the unusual searchlight turret, with its narrow aperture creating a controlled beam while protecting the lamp and operator behind armour. This combination of conventional tank features and specialised lighting equipment gives the vehicle a unique silhouette among wartime armoured vehicles.
Battlefield Role
Designed for night operations, the M3 CDL could illuminate enemy positions, river crossings and key defensive areas. The powerful light was intended to expose and disorient opposing troops while assisting friendly forces in darkness. Although CDL units were kept secret for much of the war and saw limited use in their intended role, American M3 CDL vehicles supported operations around the Rhine, including efforts to protect strategically important crossing points from night attacks.

Fun Fact
The term “Canal Defence Light” was deliberately chosen as a cover name. The project had little to do with defending canals; the harmless-sounding title helped keep the armoured searchlight programme secret.
