M3 Grant
The M3 Grant was an American-built medium tank that served with British and Commonwealth forces during the Second World War. Developed as an urgent response to the need for a tank carrying a 75 mm gun, the M3 entered production before the more advanced M4 Sherman was ready. The British version was named Grant, while the related American-pattern vehicle became widely known as the Lee.
Distinctive Design
The M3 Grant is instantly recognisable by its tall, multi-level silhouette and unusual arrangement of weapons. Its main 75 mm gun was mounted in a limited-traverse sponson on the right side of the hull, while a smaller 37 mm gun occupied the turret above. The Grant’s British-designed turret featured a rear bustle and lacked the small commander’s cupola seen on the Lee, giving it a distinctive profile.
Battlefield Role
Designed as a medium tank, the Grant combined anti-armour capability with effective high-explosive fire against field positions, infantry and anti-tank guns. It is particularly associated with the North African campaign, where its 75 mm weapon provided British armoured units with valuable additional firepower. Although its high silhouette and restricted hull-gun traverse were disadvantages, the Grant was an important transitional design that helped bridge the gap between earlier cruiser tanks and the arrival of the Sherman.

Fun Fact
The Grant was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who later became President of the United States, following the British practice of giving American tanks the names of famous American generals.
