M36B1 Jackson

Bring a distinctive late-war American tank destroyer to your collection with this detailed M36B1 Jackson model. Combining the powerful 90 mm gun of the M36 turret with the familiar hull of the M4A3 Sherman, the M36B1 offers an unusual silhouette suited to World War II displays, Allied armoured columns and carefully researched battlefield scenes.

Historical Role

The M36B1 was developed during World War II to help meet the urgent demand for heavily armed tank destroyers capable of engaging increasingly well-protected German vehicles. Entering service during the late-war campaign in Europe, it carried the 90 mm M3 gun in an open-topped rotating turret. Its role was to provide mobile anti-armour firepower, supporting American formations against enemy tanks, fortified positions and other difficult targets.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by the contrast between its high-sided M4A3 Sherman hull and the large, angular, open-topped M36 turret. The long 90 mm gun barrel gives the model a commanding profile, while the Sherman-style glacis, suspension and hull machine-gun position clearly distinguish it from M36 vehicles built on the lower M10A1 tank-destroyer chassis.

Variant Differences

The M36B1 combined the turret and armament of the standard M36 with an M4A3 Sherman hull. This arrangement retained the Sherman’s hull layout and bow machine gun, creating a taller and more substantial appearance than the M10A1-based M36. The variant provided a practical way to place the urgently needed 90 mm weapon into service using available Sherman hulls.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for late-war European dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the M36B1 can represent anti-tank positions, road columns, urban advances or armoured support scenes. Its mixed Sherman and tank-destroyer features also make it a compelling companion to other American vehicles.

Fun Fact

Despite sharing the Jackson name with the wider M36 family, the M36B1 can often be identified at a glance by its unmistakable Sherman hull beneath the open-topped 90 mm turret.
