M36B2 Jackson
The M36B2 Jackson was a late-World War II American tank destroyer combining the hard-hitting 90 mm gun of the M36 family with the diesel-powered hull of the M10. This detailed model captures an imposing United States Army vehicle designed to meet increasingly formidable German armour during the final stages of the conflict.
Historical Role
American tank destroyer doctrine emphasised mobility and concentrated firepower against enemy armoured breakthroughs. Armed with the 90 mm M3 gun, the M36B2 offered substantially greater anti-armour capability than the earlier 3-inch-gunned M10. It was intended to engage heavily protected vehicles, including Panther and Tiger tanks, while retaining the mobility needed to reposition, support advances and strengthen defensive sectors.
Distinctive Appearance
The M36B2 is recognisable by its angular M10 hull, sloped armour and large open-topped turret. Its exceptionally long 90 mm gun barrel dominates the silhouette, while the turret’s substantial rear bustle acted as a counterweight. The raised engine deck, diesel-hull details and broad tracks further contribute to its purposeful late-war appearance.
Variant Differences
The M36B2 combined the turret and 90 mm armament of the standard M36 with the diesel-powered M10 hull. By comparison, the standard M36 was generally converted from the petrol-engined M10A1. Armament remained the same, but engine-deck and rear-hull details provide the principal external modelling differences. The variant enabled available M10 hulls to be upgraded with more powerful anti-tank armament.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to late-war European dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of American armoured vehicles. It can be presented advancing with infantry, positioned in an ambush, undergoing maintenance or displayed alongside Shermans, trucks and reconnaissance vehicles.
Fun Fact
The M36’s 90 mm M3 gun belonged to the same broader weapons lineage as the powerful American 90 mm anti-aircraft gun, adapted into an effective tank-mounted weapon for engaging heavily armoured targets.
