M3A1 Lee

Historical Role
The M3 served as an important interim design while the United States developed the M4 Sherman. Its hull-mounted 75 mm gun provided valuable high-explosive and anti-armour capability, while the turret-mounted 37 mm gun could engage lighter vehicles and other battlefield targets. M3 variants saw service with Allied forces in North Africa, the Pacific and on the Eastern Front. The “Lee” name was commonly used by the British for vehicles retaining the American-style turret arrangement.
Distinctive Appearance
The M3A1 is distinguished by its cast upper hull, which gave it a more rounded appearance than the riveted construction of other M3 versions. Its tall silhouette, offset hull-mounted 75 mm gun, smaller rotating 37 mm turret and raised commander’s cupola create the characteristic tiered profile that makes the Lee instantly identifiable.

Fun Fact
The M3 Lee effectively carried its principal weapons on two levels. Although the 75 mm gun had limited sideways movement because it was mounted in the hull, the separate 37 mm turret could rotate independently, giving the tank an unusual and memorable fighting arrangement.
