Historical Role
The M3 medium tank family entered service as a rapid response to the need for a tank carrying a 75 mm gun. Its main weapon was mounted in the right side of the hull, while a smaller 37 mm gun occupied the turret. M3 tanks served in training and combat roles, with the wider family seeing notable action in North Africa and the Pacific. Although its layout offered limited traverse for the main gun, the M3 provided valuable firepower while later American medium tanks were being developed.
Distinctive Appearance
The M3A3 Lee is instantly identified by its tall, tiered profile, hull-mounted 75 mm gun, offset upper turret and prominent commander’s cupola. The welded hull gives this version cleaner plate joins than riveted M3 variants, while the stepped superstructure, angular armour and numerous hatches create a visually complex model with strong period character.
Variant Differences
The M3A3 developed from the original M3 medium tank design. It retained the characteristic 75 mm hull gun and 37 mm turret armament but used a welded hull and a twin General Motors diesel powerplant instead of the original radial engine arrangement. The welded construction and revised engine-area details are its most useful modelling distinctions. This variant helped broaden production by using an alternative engine and manufacturing method.

Fun Fact
