M3A4 Lee

Historical Role
The M3 medium tank was developed as an interim design while the turreted 75 mm-armed M4 Sherman was being prepared for production. Its hull-mounted 75 mm gun provided substantial anti-armour and high-explosive firepower, while a smaller 37 mm gun occupied the upper turret. The M3A4 was produced in limited numbers and was primarily used for training in the United States rather than overseas combat, helping crews prepare for later medium tanks.
Distinctive Appearance
The M3A4 retains the Lee’s tall, multi-level silhouette, riveted construction and asymmetrical hull-mounted 75 mm gun. Its upper turret, compact commander’s cupola, prominent tracks and stacked armament give it an instantly recognisable appearance. Compared with other M3 versions, the visibly lengthened hull and revised rear engine area are especially important identification features.
Variant Differences
The M3A4 developed from the standard M3 medium tank and retained its principal 75 mm and 37 mm armament. Its major mechanical change was the Chrysler A57 Multibank engine, which required a longer hull and alterations to the rear section. For modellers, the stretched body and revised engine deck are the clearest differences. The variant existed to make use of an available engine solution during a period of urgent wartime production.
