Historical Role
The M4 Sherman became a cornerstone of United States and Allied armoured forces during the Second World War. Armed with the 75 mm M3 gun, early M4s were versatile medium tanks used for infantry support, mobile firepower, exploitation and engagements with enemy armour. Their mechanical reliability, adaptable design and suitability for mass production enabled Allied units to field and maintain them in large numbers across multiple theatres.
Distinctive Appearance
The M4 DV combines the Sherman’s angular welded upper hull with prominent driver and co-driver hood structures incorporating direct-vision openings. Other characteristic features include the rounded 75 mm gun turret, tall hull profile, front-mounted transmission housing and Vertical Volute Spring Suspension. The direct-vision fittings provide an especially distinctive detail for modellers depicting early Sherman production.
Variant Differences
The M4 DV was not a separate official Sherman designation, but an early configuration of the welded-hull M4. It retained the standard M4’s radial engine and 75 mm armament; its defining difference was the provision of direct-vision slots in the forward crew hoods. These gave the driver and assistant driver a direct view ahead, but created vulnerable openings, so later production eliminated them in favour of improved periscope arrangements.
Modelling Uses
