M4A2 Sherman
Bring an important Allied medium tank to your collection with the Blueprint to Print 3D M4A2 Sherman. Produced in the United States during the Second World War, this diesel-powered member of the Sherman family served with several Allied nations and offers a versatile subject for military modelling in a wide range of scales.
Historical Role
The M4A2 fulfilled the Sherman’s core battlefield role: supporting infantry, engaging enemy positions and providing mobile armoured firepower. Although the United States Army generally standardised on petrol-powered Shermans, the M4A2 saw American service with the United States Marine Corps and was supplied extensively to Allied forces through Lend-Lease. British, Commonwealth, Free French and Soviet crews operated the type in several theatres, including the Eastern Front and campaigns in Western Europe and the Pacific.
Distinctive Appearance
The M4A2 retained the recognisable Sherman silhouette, with a tall hull, forward transmission housing, rounded turret and vertically sprung suspension units. Its diesel installation resulted in a distinctive engine deck and rear hull arrangement compared with petrol-engined Sherman variants. Production changes mean that M4A2 tanks could carry different hull, turret and gun configurations, but the characteristic engine-deck layout remains an important identifying feature.
Variant Differences
The M4A2 was a Sherman-family variant distinguished primarily by its paired General Motors diesel engines, rather than the radial petrol engine used in the M4 and M4A1. It was produced with both 75 mm and 76 mm armament configurations, depending on the production period. For modellers, the engine-deck grilles, rear plate and exhaust arrangement are the most significant visible differences. The variant helped expand Sherman production by using an alternative powerplant and was particularly suitable for Lend-Lease supply.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Second World War dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can represent an Allied vehicle in European, Soviet or Pacific settings, with the choice of scale allowing anything from compact railway scenes to detailed display centrepieces.
Fun Fact
Soviet crews commonly called the Sherman “Emcha,” a nickname derived from the Russian pronunciation of “M4.”
