M4A4 Sherman

Bring an important Allied armoured vehicle to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed M4A4 Sherman. Developed in the United States during the Second World War, this distinctive Sherman variant served extensively with British, Commonwealth and other Allied forces. Its recognisable profile makes it an excellent centrepiece for historical scenes, military collections and tabletop displays.

Historical Role

The M4A4 was a medium tank designed to combine mobility, protection and dependable firepower. Armed in its standard form with a 75 mm gun, it could engage enemy armour, support infantry and attack field fortifications. Although the United States did not generally deploy the M4A4 in combat, large numbers were supplied to Allied armies through Lend-Lease. British forces designated it the Sherman V and used it in campaigns including North Africa, Italy and north-west Europe.

Distinctive Appearance

The model captures the M4A4’s welded hull, rounded turret, prominent gun mantlet and tall Sherman silhouette. Its extended engine compartment and lengthened hull produced wider spacing between the suspension bogies than on many other Sherman variants. Additional characteristic features include the rear engine deck, vertical volute spring suspension and practical, mass-produced hull construction.

Variant Differences

Developed from the wider M4 Sherman family, the M4A4 used Chrysler’s A57 Multibank engine, which combined five automobile engines into one power unit. Accommodating this machinery required a longer hull and revised engine deck, creating the variant’s most visible identification features. It was produced to expand Sherman output by using an alternative engine supply.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the M4A4 can represent British and Commonwealth armoured formations across several theatres. It works equally well in convoy scenes, maintenance settings, advancing tank troops or combined-arms battlefield layouts.

Fun Fact

The M4A4 became the basis for many British Sherman Firefly conversions. Fitted with the powerful 17-pounder gun, these vehicles were designated Sherman VC and provided Allied units with greatly improved anti-tank capability.
