M5 Stuart
The M5 Stuart was an American light tank of the Second World War, combining the established fighting qualities of the Stuart family with a substantially redesigned hull and an unusual automotive power system. Its compact proportions, angular armour and recognisable turret make it an engaging subject for vehicle modellers. Historical Role
Designed for mobility, the M5 served in reconnaissance, screening, flank protection and light support roles. Armed with a 37 mm gun, it could engage light vehicles and fortified positions, while also supporting infantry in conditions where larger tanks were less practical.

Variant Differences
Developed from the M3 Stuart family, the M5 replaced the earlier power arrangement with twin Cadillac automotive V8 engines and automatic transmissions. This required a redesigned hull with a higher rear deck and altered front-hull layout, while retaining the Stuart’s light-tank role and 37 mm main armament. The design existed to maintain light-tank production using an alternative, commercially derived powertrain.
