M55 Quad Gun Trailer
Recreate a distinctive piece of American World War II firepower with this detailed model of the M55 Quad Gun Trailer. Combining a compact towed carriage with four heavy machine guns, the M55 makes an imposing addition to any US Army collection. Awarded our RARE FIND badge, this model represents a specialised quad-gun trailer subject that is not commonly available in model form.
Historical Role
The M55 was a mobile anti-aircraft weapon mounting four .50-calibre Browning M2 heavy machine guns on a two-wheeled trailer. Designed to provide concentrated defensive fire against low-flying aircraft, it could be towed into position and stabilised for operation. Quad mounts were also highly effective against lightly protected vehicles, exposed equipment and ground troops, giving American units a powerful and flexible close-support weapon.
Distinctive Appearance
The model’s defining feature is its compact cluster of four parallel machine-gun barrels, arranged around the central powered mounting. Ammunition boxes, protective shields, the operator’s position and the low trailer chassis create a dense, mechanical silhouette. The towing drawbar, paired wheels and stabilising supports clearly distinguish the M55 from the better-known self-propelled quad mounts carried on half-tracks.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for World War II dioramas, the M55 can be displayed in an anti-aircraft emplacement, beside an ammunition crew or being towed along a supply route. It is also well suited to model railways featuring wartime military traffic, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors seeking unusual American support equipment. The wide choice of scales allows it to complement everything from compact layouts to highly detailed display scenes.
Fun Fact
The four-gun M45 family of mounts earned memorable nicknames because of the tremendous volume of fire produced by four Browning heavy machine guns firing together. The same basic quad-mount concept also appeared on the famous M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage half-track.
