M56 Howitzer 105mm – RARE FIND

Expand your World War II US artillery collection with this detailed M56 105 mm howitzer model. Its compact field-gun profile, exposed operating equipment and purposeful carriage make it an engaging standalone piece or the centre of a complete gun-position scene. This model carries our RARE FIND badge because the M56 105 mm howitzer is an uncommon reference among readily available artillery subjects.

Historical Role

American 105 mm field howitzers were central to divisional artillery support during World War II. Operating behind the front line, their crews delivered indirect fire against infantry positions, defensive works and battlefield strongpoints. They could also fire smoke and illumination rounds to support manoeuvres. Towed by suitable military vehicles and served by a coordinated gun crew, weapons of this class combined mobility with responsive battlefield fire support.

Distinctive Appearance

The model features the recognisable silhouette of a towed 105 mm howitzer, including its prominent barrel and recoil assembly, protective gun shield, carriage wheels and split trails. Handwheels, supporting structures and exposed mechanical elements give the piece a practical, crew-operated character. Its low stance and angular shield provide a visually distinctive contrast to tanks, trucks and other vehicles in a display.

Modelling Uses

Create a prepared firing position with ammunition, crew figures, camouflage netting, shell crates and a towing vehicle, or show the howitzer travelling with an artillery column. It is equally suitable for World War II dioramas, military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and collectors seeking a less commonly represented US artillery reference. Larger scales provide space for close-up detailing, while smaller scales work well in broad battlefield or railway scenes.

Fun Fact

A field howitzer’s characteristic split trails were opened when deployed, helping provide a stable firing platform while also allowing the weapon to be closed into a compact arrangement for towing.

Available Scales

Available in 1:87, 1:76, 1:72, 1:48 and 1:35 scales.

Finish Options
