M59 155mm Long Tom – RARE FIND

This detailed model represents the American 155mm Long Tom, one of the United States Army’s principal heavy field guns of World War II. The less commonly modelled M59 designation was later associated with the wartime M2 gun, better known simply as the “Long Tom.” This unusual designation earns the model its RARE FIND badge and offers collectors a distinctive interpretation of an important American artillery piece.

Historical Role

Long Tom batteries provided long-range heavy artillery support for US forces in several World War II theatres. Operating behind the front line, the gun was employed for counter-battery fire, interdiction, attacks on fortified positions and the disruption of enemy movement. Its range and powerful 155mm ammunition allowed corps-level artillery units to engage targets beyond the reach of standard divisional field guns. For transport, the weapon was normally towed by a heavy artillery tractor.

Distinctive Appearance

The Long Tom is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long barrel, substantial breech assembly and low, eight-wheel carriage with pneumatic tyres. Long split trails provided stability when deployed, while the broad carriage and prominent recoil equipment emphasised the weapon’s size and power. These features create an imposing silhouette in either firing or transport scenes.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to World War II artillery positions, US Army dioramas, supply routes and gun-line scenes. It can also serve as a striking heavy-equipment load or trackside feature on period model railways. Multiple scales make it suitable for wargaming displays, museum-style arrangements and collectors building dedicated American artillery collections.

Fun Fact

The nickname “Long Tom” reflected the gun’s notably long barrel and distinguished it from shorter 155mm howitzers. The Long Tom was developed to replace older American stocks of French-designed 155mm GPF guns inherited from the First World War era.
