M8 Greyhound
Bring a classic American reconnaissance vehicle to your collection with this detailed M8 Greyhound model. Developed during the Second World War, the Greyhound combined speed, mobility and a compact fighting profile, making it an instantly recognisable addition to Allied vehicle displays, military dioramas and historical collections.
Historical Role
The M8 was a six-wheeled light armoured car used extensively by United States forces from 1943 onward, particularly in the European and Italian campaigns. Its principal tasks included reconnaissance, route patrols, screening advancing formations, escort duties and maintaining contact between units. Armed with a turret-mounted 37 mm gun and a coaxial machine gun, it could engage infantry positions and lightly armoured vehicles, although its relatively thin armour and limited cross-country performance encouraged crews to rely on speed, observation and paved-road mobility rather than prolonged combat.
Distinctive Appearance
The Greyhound is defined by its low six-wheel hull, sloping armour plates and small open-topped turret. Prominent wheel arches, a pointed front profile and the turret’s compact gun mounting give it a purposeful silhouette. Many wartime vehicles also carried a heavy machine gun on a turret-mounted ring, adding further visual interest to the model.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II dioramas depicting reconnaissance patrols, road columns, liberated towns or advancing American formations. The smaller scales suit model railways and compact wargaming displays, while the larger versions provide greater presence for painting projects, vehicle line-ups and dedicated collectors. It can also be paired with infantry, jeeps, trucks and other Allied vehicles to create a varied period scene.
Fun Fact
British troops are widely credited with giving the M8 its famous “Greyhound” nickname. Its automotive design also formed the basis of the M20 armoured utility car, which replaced the turret with an open fighting compartment for command, liaison and general-purpose duties.
