M9 Half-Track
Recreate an important American-built World War II armoured transport with the M9 Half-Track from Blueprint to Print 3D. Produced by International Harvester primarily for Lend-Lease supply, the M9 combined cross-country mobility, practical carrying capacity and light armour in a versatile vehicle suitable for a wide range of Allied operations.
Historical Role
The M9 served as a troop and equipment carrier, reconnaissance support vehicle, weapons transport and artillery tractor. Its combination of front wheels and rear tracks gave it better off-road performance than a conventional truck while retaining useful road speed and steering characteristics. Although manufactured in the United States, the type was principally intended for Allied recipients through Lend-Lease rather than widespread frontline service with the US Army.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle features the unmistakable silhouette of an American wartime half-track: a conventional front bonnet, armoured radiator shutters, angular windscreen armour and an open-topped fighting compartment. Its tracked rear bogies contrast with the steerable front axle, while International Harvester construction can be recognised by details including rounded rear hull corners and subtly different body forms from more familiar White-built vehicles.
Variant Differences
The M9 was developed as International Harvester’s counterpart to the M2 Half-Track Car. It combined an M2-style compact utility and stowage arrangement with International Harvester mechanical components and hull construction related to the M5. Its flexible machine-gun provision supported transport and reconnaissance duties rather than giving it a fixed main weapon. The variant existed largely to expand American production for Lend-Lease requirements.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to Allied convoy scenes, supply columns, reconnaissance units and vehicle parks. It can add historical variety to World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collections, especially alongside American, British, French or Soviet Lend-Lease subjects.
Fun Fact
Despite being designed and built in the United States, the M9 is more closely associated with overseas Allied forces than with US Army combat formations, making it an especially interesting alternative to the better-known M2 and M3 half-tracks.
