Macchi C.202 Folgore
Bring one of Italy’s most capable World War II fighters to your collection with this detailed Macchi C.202 Folgore 3D-printed model. Combining elegant Italian aerodynamics with a powerful inline engine, the Folgore represented a major advance for the Regia Aeronautica and became a respected opponent in Mediterranean skies.
Historical Role
Entering operational service in 1941, the Macchi C.202 served primarily as a fighter and interceptor. It equipped Regia Aeronautica units in North Africa, the central Mediterranean, over Italy and on the Eastern Front. Its speed, agility and refined handling allowed Italian pilots to challenge contemporary Allied fighters, while its duties included interception, bomber escort and air-superiority patrols. The type remained an important front-line aircraft until more heavily armed Italian fighters became available.
Distinctive Appearance
The Folgore is instantly recognisable by its streamlined fuselage, long engine cowling, enclosed cockpit and smoothly rounded wing profile. Its narrow-track undercarriage retracted inward into the wings, preserving the aircraft’s clean silhouette in flight. The prominent spinner and carefully faired nose reflected the installation of the licence-built Alfa Romeo RA.1000, derived from the German Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted-V engine.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II Mediterranean and North African dioramas, airfield scenes, aviation collections and wargaming displays. Smaller scales suit model railways, compact airbase layouts and formation displays, while larger versions offer greater presence for painting, weathering and close-up presentation. It is an appealing choice for collectors of Italian military aviation and distinctive wartime aircraft.
Fun Fact
The name “Folgore” means “Thunderbolt” in Italian. The aircraft also featured slightly unequal wing lengths, an unusual design measure intended to help counteract engine torque during flight.
