Marder I
Bring a distinctive Wehrmacht tank destroyer to your collection with this detailed Marder I scale model. Developed during the Second World War, the vehicle paired a captured French chassis with German anti-tank firepower. Its UNIQUE DESIGN badge recognises precisely this unusual combination: a self-propelled anti-tank gun built on the Lorraine 37L tractor chassis.
Historical Role
The Marder I entered Wehrmacht service as a mobile platform for the 7.5 cm PaK 40. It gave anti-tank units greater mobility than a towed gun, allowing crews to reposition, support defensive lines and engage armoured threats from prepared or opportunistic firing positions. Its open fighting compartment and limited protection made careful positioning essential rather than close assault.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is defined by its narrow Lorraine running gear, compact hull and tall, open-topped fighting compartment at the rear. The prominent PaK 40 barrel, angular gun shield and slab-sided armour create a purposeful, top-heavy silhouette that contrasts strongly with the small French-derived chassis beneath it.
Variant Differences
The Marder I conversion originated with the unarmed Lorraine 37L tracked supply tractor used by French forces. The basic automotive chassis and running gear were retained, while the load-carrying rear was adapted to support a 7.5 cm PaK 40 and an armoured, open-topped crew compartment. These changes transformed a logistics vehicle into a mobile tank destroyer to meet the Wehrmacht’s need for improved anti-tank mobility.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for World War II dioramas, military scenes on model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, the Marder I works equally well in a roadside ambush, workshop conversion scene or vehicle column. Multiple scales make it suitable as a compact gaming piece or a larger painting and display project.
Fun Fact
In German documentation, the captured chassis was identified with the suffix “(f)”, indicating French origin. The Marder I is therefore a notable example of the Wehrmacht adapting captured equipment to carry a standard German anti-tank weapon.
