Marder II Ausf. D

Bring a distinctive German tank destroyer to your collection with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model of the Marder II Ausf. D. Developed during the Second World War, this practical conversion combined an existing Panzer II chassis with a powerful anti-tank gun, giving Wehrmacht formations greater mobile firepower against increasingly well-armoured enemy vehicles.

Historical Role

The Marder II Ausf. D served as a self-propelled anti-tank gun, allowing German Panzerjäger units to reposition their weapon more quickly than crews using conventional towed guns. Its captured Soviet 7.62 cm gun, modified for German service as the 7.62 cm Pak 36(r), provided effective anti-armour capability. The vehicle’s open fighting compartment offered limited protection, so it was best employed from concealed firing positions rather than as a turreted battle tank.

Distinctive Appearance

This vehicle is instantly recognisable by its high, open-topped fighting compartment, prominent gun shield and long anti-tank gun. Its Ausf. D/E-pattern running gear features four large road wheels on each side, creating a noticeably different silhouette from the more familiar Panzer II suspension with five smaller road wheels. The compact chassis and tall superstructure give the model a purposeful, improvised appearance.

Variant Differences

The Marder II Ausf. D was developed from the fast Panzer II Ausf. D/E chassis, including vehicles associated with the Flammpanzer II programme. Instead of a turret or flame-projector installation, it carried the captured 7.62 cm Pak 36(r) in an open armoured compartment. Its large-wheel suspension and Soviet-derived gun distinguish it visually from later Marder II conversions based on the Panzer II Ausf. F and armed with the German 7.5 cm Pak 40.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, historical wargaming displays, military-themed model railways and collectors of German Wehrmacht vehicles. Multiple scale options make it suitable for compact scenes, tabletop forces or detailed display collections.

Fun Fact

Despite sharing the Marder II name, the Ausf. D-based version had a substantially different chassis and main gun from the better-known Ausf. F-based vehicle.
