Marder III Ausf. H

Bring a distinctive Wehrmacht Panzerjäger to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed Marder III Ausf. H. Combining the proven chassis of the Czech-designed Panzer 38(t) with a powerful German anti-tank gun, this open-topped vehicle offers an unmistakable silhouette for World War II scenes, displays and armoured vehicle collections.

Historical Role

The Marder III Ausf. H served as a mobile anti-tank platform, giving German formations greater mobility than a conventional towed gun. Armed with the 7.5 cm Pak 40/3, it was intended to engage increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks while remaining able to relocate quickly. Its relatively light protection meant that it was best employed from prepared or concealed firing positions rather than as a fully armoured assault vehicle.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, open-topped fighting compartment, prominent gun shield and long anti-tank gun barrel. The compact Panzer 38(t) running gear contrasts with the elevated superstructure, creating the characteristic top-heavy profile of the Marder family. Exposed upper crew positions and angular armour plates further emphasise its purpose-built, field-expedient appearance.

Variant Differences

The Ausf. H developed from the Panzer 38(t) chassis and followed earlier Marder III vehicles, replacing the captured Soviet 7.62 cm gun used on the initial version with the German 7.5 cm Pak 40/3. It retained a rear-mounted engine and a centrally positioned fighting compartment, unlike the later Ausf. M, which moved the engine forward and placed the fighting compartment at the rear. These changes supported a practical mobile anti-tank solution using available chassis production.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for Eastern Front or wider European theatre dioramas, this model also suits military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German World War II vehicles. The range of scales allows it to serve as a compact scenic element, gaming piece or detailed display model.

Fun Fact

The name “Marder” means “marten” in German, continuing the Wehrmacht practice of applying animal names to armoured fighting vehicles.
