Marder III Ausf. M – RARE VARIANT

Recreate one of the most distinctive German Panzerjäger vehicles of the Second World War with this detailed Marder III Ausf. M model. Combining the proven Czech-designed Panzer 38(t) chassis with a powerful German anti-tank gun, this later Marder III configuration offers an unmistakable subject for historically themed collections, layouts and displays.

Historical Role

The Marder III Ausf. M served as a mobile anti-tank weapon for the Wehrmacht. Its 7.5 cm Pak 40/3 gun gave German Panzerjäger units a practical means of engaging increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks while retaining greater mobility than a towed anti-tank gun. Although its open-topped fighting compartment offered limited protection against artillery fragments, small-arms fire from above and harsh weather, the vehicle was effective when used from prepared or concealed firing positions.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. M is recognisable by its low Panzer 38(t)-derived running gear, centrally positioned engine area and rear-mounted, open-topped fighting compartment. Sloped armour plates surround the prominent Pak 40 gun, while the exposed upper compartment, angular shield and compact tracked chassis create a characteristic late-war German tank-destroyer profile.

Variant Differences

Developed from earlier Marder III vehicles on the Panzer 38(t) chassis, the Ausf. M relocated the engine to the middle and moved the fighting compartment to the rear. It retained the German 7.5 cm Pak 40-based armament, but its revised arrangement improved crew organisation and protection compared with earlier layouts. The rear superstructure is its clearest visual modelling distinction and the reason this later configuration carries the RARE VARIANT badge.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Marder III Ausf. M suits defensive positions, roadside scenes, repair areas and Panzerjäger formations. Its open fighting compartment also provides opportunities for crew figures, stowage and weathering details.

Fun Fact

The “M” designation reflected the vehicle’s revised middle-engine arrangement, which enabled the fighting compartment to be placed at the rear.
