Matilda I (A11) – British Infantry Tank | RARE FIND
Recreate an important early-war British armoured vehicle with this detailed Matilda I (A11) model. Designed as an infantry tank, the Matilda I combined heavy armour with a compact profile and machine-gun armament. This model is ideal for representing the British Expeditionary Force during the 1940 campaign in France.
Historical Role
The Matilda I was developed to accompany infantry, crossing defended ground at walking pace while using its Vickers machine gun against enemy troops and exposed positions. Its armour offered substantial protection for the period, but its limited speed, two-man crew and lack of a cannon restricted its battlefield flexibility. Matilda I tanks saw limited frontline service in 1940, including action during the Battle of Arras. Only 140 were produced, earning this model its RARE FIND badge.
Distinctive Appearance
The A11 is instantly recognisable by its small cast turret, low and compact hull, prominent driver’s position and closely enclosed running gear. Its narrow tracks, short hull and single turret-mounted machine gun give it a purposeful appearance that differs markedly from the larger Matilda II. These characteristic proportions make it especially distinctive in early World War II British formations.
Modelling Uses
A strong choice for Battle of France dioramas, British Expeditionary Force scenes and early-war wargaming displays, the Matilda I also suits military model railways requiring period armoured loads or roadside scenes. Its limited production and unusual silhouette make it equally appealing to collectors of British tanks and lesser-seen World War II vehicles.
Fun Fact
Despite sharing the Matilda name, the Matilda I and better-known Matilda II were separate tank designs. The Matilda I was considerably smaller and carried only a machine gun, while both reflected the British concept of a heavily protected infantry-support tank.
