Matilda II Mk II (A12)

Recreate one of Britain’s most recognisable Second World War infantry tanks with this detailed Matilda II Mk II (A12) model. Designed to combine heavy armour with steady infantry support, the Matilda II became particularly famous during the early campaigns in North Africa, where its imposing protection made it a formidable opponent.

Historical Role

The Matilda II was an infantry tank intended to advance alongside foot soldiers, suppress defensive positions and withstand anti-tank fire. Its main armament was the Ordnance QF 2-pounder gun, supported by a coaxial machine gun. Although relatively slow, the tank’s thick armour proved highly effective during the early war, especially against many of the lighter anti-tank weapons encountered in France and the Western Desert.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately identifiable by its compact, rounded turret, tall hull and extensive armoured side skirts. These skirts conceal much of the closely grouped suspension while incorporating characteristic openings used to release accumulated mud and sand. A narrow fighting compartment, prominent driver’s position and robust cast and bolted surfaces give the Matilda II its unmistakably solid appearance.

Variant Differences

The Mk II developed from the initial Matilda II Mk I while retaining the same fundamental hull, twin-engine arrangement and 2-pounder main gun. Its principal change was the adoption of a coaxial Besa machine gun in place of the earlier Vickers weapon, producing a corresponding difference in the turret machine-gun mounting. This update brought the tank into line with the Besa armament increasingly used in British armoured vehicles.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for North African, British home-front or early-war European dioramas, this model also suits model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and dedicated military vehicle collectors. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway scenes and battlefield formations to larger display pieces with prominent surface detail.

Fun Fact

The Matilda II earned the informal title “Queen of the Desert” after its notable early successes in North Africa, where its armour was difficult for many opposing guns to defeat.
